Dear Friends and Supporters:
Last week the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a report to the United Nations that outlined the effects of global warming on the earth. It concluded that we are most certainly going to surpass 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming within the next 30 years, which will lead to increased severe and unpredictable weather, including hurricanes, severe storms, droughts, wildfires and floods.
But this report also made clear that we still have the ability to reduce these impacts of global warming by making changes to reduce carbon emissions now. And while the most important steps should be taken at the federal level, we can make changes at the local level too.
One of the first things our town should do is develop and implement a climate action plan – a strategic roadmap that specifically outlines how we can mitigate climate change impacts on a local level. These plans typically include policies for conserving resources, preventing pollution, and improving sustainability efforts. A few examples are: studying the environmental impact of new developments, incentivizing energy-efficient buildings and adopting waste-reduction strategies (such as food scrap recycling).
Nine of our neighboring municipalities are already working alongside Westchester County to develop regional and local climate action plans. Harrison should have one too.
While we can’t change what got us here, we do have the ability to change how we move forward. And electing leaders who will prioritize addressing climate change and its impacts is essential. Failure to act will mean leaving a world for our children that is exponentially worse than the one we have today.
The Moving Harrison Forward team understands the urgency and severity of climate change and promises to take real steps to make Harrison greener and a leader in environmental sustainability. Because the alternative is no longer an option.
