Valuing the People Behind the Cleanup
Dear Friends and Supporters:
Some municipalities have turned to private contractors for municipal sanitation services. We are skeptical that a profit-maximizing enterprise can deliver the same high-quality services as our municipal workers at lower cost. Privatization of municipal services is, in fact, a favored strategy of the other side of the political spectrum. However, its supposed cost savings are often illusory.
Residents routinely praise the work of our union Sanitation and other Department of Public Works crews, including garbage and recycling pickup and snow removal. The cleanup from the aftermath of Hurricane Ida proved beyond all doubt the benefits of having a public DPW workforce. Our Sanitation and Highway crews worked around the clock to clear trash and debris from the storm.
Imagine what would have happened had we relied on a private contractor to provide town-wide sanitation services. That carting firm would have been stretched thin by other clients and the devastation wrought by the storm. Even if the firm had the manpower to handle the massive volume of trash and debris, it would have charged premium rates.
The work of our Police and Fire Departments and EMS gives residents invaluable peace of mind. So too does the effort of our DPW crews, who go about their work with little fanfare and a tremendous sense of pride. They are one of our town’s underappreciated resources. No private firm could match their level of dedication and reliability at any price.

In total agreement with Joe Derwin that coop and condo owners - we also pay taxes- do not have Harrison DPW municipal trash pickup from the curb (same as houses) which we had for decades. Yet our Harrison property taxes stayed the same and we still pay for the cost of picking up the trash for other residents yet our trash has to be picked up by commercial expensive carters after the town cut our services . One other point: the Harrison roads have MORE truck traffic, diesel fumes and noise when the various commercial trash firms arrive and drive on town roads several times per week. - Elio 🧐😞

If you live in an apartment or co-op, a few years back, by the vote of the Town Board, residents were forced to go to private carting companies for these services. That means the residents pay for the private cartingservice as well as the Town DPW through our taxes. That's unfair.
The town has slowly lowered service. Used to not have to bring the garbage to the curb. The sanitation workers used to come to the side or back and take the cans up. It was especially great for our elderly neighbors. Then, we had to bring up to the curb. Then the town reduced the number of workers, and bought expensive trucks and provided residents with cans, so they can do more with less.
What the hell are you talking about? This entire letter is a pile of crap. You are accusing the other side of doing something that they have not done. And it is YOU, the democrats who want to cut setvices. It is YOU, the democrats that have criticized the public servants in Harrison. And it is the DEMOCRATIC run towns on Westchester that have hired private firms for their services. You lie, lie, lie, and think that people will believe you. You really are clueless...
Are you insinuating that the current administration is considering privatization of municipal services? Because I don’t see a point to this post.
