Dear Friends and Supporters:
One of the most enjoyable parts of running for office is the opportunity to speak with residents of our town, and to hear directly from them how we could better serve them. One area where everyone agrees progress could be made is the communication to, and from, our town government.
The famous journalist Sydney J. Harrison once said, “information and communication are often used interchangeably, but they are quite different things. Information is giving out; communication is getting through.”
And we’ve heard loud and clear that you, our residents, want more communication from One Heineman Place, and not just more information.
For instance, how can you be better informed and involved in town projects that are under consideration? How can residents more easily report issues, such as potholes, litter, and wildlife encounters, confident that your concern is routed to the appropriate department? And how can we develop systems that help everyone better understand the progress of permit applications, the nuances of town code and how committees are appointed?
As part of our effort to Move Harrison Forward, we believe this is the time to evaluate and reimagine how we can accomplish this.
One example of the type of innovation we could use is the city of Mount Vernon’s recently released CMVNY Connect app which allows its residents to communicate directly with city agencies and officials, instantly report quality of life issues and have garbage & recycling schedules at their fingertips. Funded by a New York State grant, it is free to all residents.
It is time we stop being beholden to the past way of doing things and for us to actively find ways to improve our town. Improving, modernizing and streamlining communication should be one of them.
