Dear Friends and Supporters:
In 1928, Thomas Briggs, an astute marketer from Memphis, Tennessee, founded Welcome Wagon. The idea behind Welcome Wagon was to offer hospitality to a community’s newcomers. He hired “hostesses,” women who were friendly and knowledgeable about the relevant neighborhood, to personally deliver baskets of goods from local businesses to new homeowners.
Though the days of Welcome Wagon hostesses are long gone, there remains a need to welcome new homeowners into the community. The method of delivering this message may be different now, but the need remains.
For many years, neighboring towns have been receiving new families into their midst by offering memberships in Newcomers & New Neighbors Clubs. These clubs are friendly and vibrant social organizations that serve newcomers and residents alike.
During the pandemic, we saw a surge in the number of families who chose Harrison as their new home. Many hail from New York City and have selected Harrison because of its beautiful residences, safe neighborhoods and excellent schools. It’s time for Harrison to roll out its welcome mat in the form of a Newcomers & New Neighbors Club.
This club would help ease the transition to life in our community by providing opportunities for new friendships though a variety of activities. Among the club’s family-friendly events could be organized playgroups, tot cupcake picnics, and celebrations for everything from Octoberfest to Valentine’s Day. For adults, activities could include book clubs, organized sports leagues, and girls’ and guys’ nights out.
Members would be encouraged to start new special interest groups to connect with locals who share their focus.
To this end, the Moving Harrison Forward team is seeking volunteers to help create social media platforms for this newcomers club and to participate in planning and organizing the club’s activities.
